The Ice Flood

I don't understand why, but water does wierd things at very low temperatures.

Here's the West Fork. It's frozen over, but is still flowing. At the bottom of this photo, you can see the river taking two unique branches.

-

One branch goes down the normal channel, but the other seems to be flowing uphill. Can this be?

-

Unfortunately, it is true. Part of the river has been wicked up by the snow, and is flowing up and over the railroad grade. The line is fouled by ice, but is still open. But for how long?

-

The river continues on the other side of the railroad grade. It is frozen over, but if you walk on the ice you can punch through and see the water flowing beneath the ice.

-

Once again, one branch is flowing down, the other is flowing uphill.

-

Down the valley and up and over the track.

-

And it's flowing at a remarkable rate too.

Winter adds a lot of interesting sights that not many are willing to get out and see.
