Boxcar IPRR #302 is now Great Northern 38722.
-
What's different about this car is the use of "Youngstown" doors and the
use of "double doors".
This is a Precision Steel Car Co. kit, but they do not sell a double door kit.
Double door cars were commonly used to transport
large furniture and automobiles and parts. The circus also used them
extensively.
-
The thing about the 40 foot
double door cars is - you see them in all the old B&W
steam films, but until recently, almost no models were made
of them in any scale. Many have never heard of them.
It's like a piece of history we almost overlooked. Atlas
released a batch of them in N scale in their
"Train Man" series a few years back. I discovered them by looking
at old films.
-
The Atlas N scale boxcar used as a pattern.

To make one, you need to make youself extra door tracks and some filler plates
to fill in the sides where the new door tracks go. Then buy four "Youngstown"
stamped doors from Precision Steel Car Co. You can use the original door parts
as backer plates for new doors and yes - you will have enough. Spot weld the
doors to the backer plates.
Thanks to Doug for applying the decals.
