Return to Bell, Arizona
October, 1974

-

The lumber mill in McNary was still in operation, so freight trains still used this line.
We are a few miles east of Show Low on U.S. route 60 at the Apache Railway grade crossing.
-

Mark Epstein was an old college room mate. We would still get together and
go hiking and camping and exploring. Is that an old coach being used as a storage shed?
-

Not much here. Time to go. But first let's take one more look to the south.
These rails, though proud and shiny at this time, are now gone, thanks to
a fire that closed the McNary sawmill in 1982. Porter Mountain is still there.

One thing is for sure. If you visit Bell, you are almost assured of a
spectacular sky - whether cloudy or clear. Here, four years later, a tank
car has replaced the two boxcars. Four more years and the line is history.

Mesa Redondo is visible in the clearing.
