Image 212 -- Air Tank (whistle) End This just functions to make the whistle housing look like an air tank. Yes I know, I could run a pipe into the end of it to make it look more like an air reservoir. Image 213 -- Arch Braces and Base Stancions Two totally new items to fabricate. I don't really understand the real purpose of the Arch Braces. Almost every locomotive drawing has them. Had to look them up in the locomotive dictionary to find out what they are called. The base stancions actually do hold the hand railing in place to the front foot plates. I also made a drawbar (not shown) to couple the tender to the locomotive. Image 214 -- Sand Piping I didn't need 4 photos for this one so I merged them into one. These are the sand pipes. They carry sand from the sand domes to the driving wheels. Yes they are fake (non functional). They too will look better painted. Image 215 -- Ersatz Boiler, Saddle End. In several places in my photo essay I talk about the "Ersatz Boiler". Well here it is. It's just a piece of pipe. Attached to it are the throttle valve, branch tee, and the internal branch pipes. I had to remove it to teflon tape the pipe joints. Too much air was getting lost at the joints. Image 216 -- Ersatz Boiler, Cab End. At the cab end - not much there, except this Tee which connects to the air chuck and the air tender. The silicone tubing insulates the pipe from the boiler backhead.
