There are many parts you can make or work on at almost any time during the project. As I mentioned earlier, there are many castings to be machined. Among them are the smokebox and boiler details. These include the sand domes, steam dome, and the smokestack.

Sand domes consist of the base, the body, the cover, and the lid. The steam dome has a base, body, and a cover. The bodies shown here are all made from stainless steel pipe. That is a builder's option. In this photo, the base of the smokestack is primed. Due to the shape of the base, you cannot clean it up using the lathe, so the die grinder is used to achieve the desired shape. The primer helps me see the contour and lets me know where more grinding is needed.

More parts you can work on at any time include the pilot and trailing truck wheels, and the leaf springs,

So what's next? Boiler? I don't think so. Smokebox? Maybe.
